Abstract

The rapid growth of global tourism has placed considerable pressure on environmental carrying capacity, cultural preservation, and the well-being of local communities across many destinations. This article examines the concept of sustainable destination development as an integrated approach to modern tourism management, one that simultaneously combines economic, social, and environmental dimensions. Using a systematic literature review of recent scholarly publications, this article identifies the key elements of sustainable destination development, including multi-stakeholder collaborative governance, carrying-capacity-based planning, community empowerment, and sustainability indicator systems. The findings show that destinations adopting integrated planning models tend to achieve higher sustainability performance while still maintaining their economic competitiveness. This article concludes that the success of sustainable destination development depends heavily on synergy among government policy, community participation, and private-sector commitment within an adaptive governance framework.
